"Gas stations are disappearing in Bethesda, MD. And there may be stations disappearing from many other suburbs too. The Washington Post says that in some suburbs of Washington DC, "gas stations are going the way of the drive-in movie."

Just today - temporarily closed a Marathon in the MSL in Wheaton, Illinois on Route 38.
About a month ago - temporarily closed an unbranded station in Carbondale, Illinois (other end of the state) and it has not yet reopened.
Over the past few months - also temporarily closed Marathon stations in the MSL along I-57 that look like they had been closed awhile - one in Gilman, Illinois and one in Ina (200 miles apart).

We had a Speedway near my house to close and was completely torn down. I don't understand why because this station was busy all of the time and kept a BP up the street in line with pricing. Now the BP is running rampant with his prices with no competition nearby.

Dozens, but I live near the inner city and that's normal, no matter what the economy is doing. They come and go, change brands, or go independent of any chain. They serve as grocery stores for most of the local population.
